Swindon in the Media

The media has been littered with doom and gloom stories about the credit crunch and hardship, but there have been a few glimmers of light recently that I want to draw your attention to.

The first is an article published in the Western Daily Press on 19 July which highlights that according to a recent study by the Works Foundation, Swindon is the fourth most productive place in the UK ? coming out above London in the rankings.

The second article appears in the latest edition of Swindon Business News which predicts that Swindon businesses are set to outperform other towns and cities in the UK by a large margin over the coming months.

Swindon is an economic powerhouse and Developers continue to recognise the long term potential of Swindon and are willing to commit to our regeneration plans - development agreements are on the cusp of being signed.

At a time of economic uncertainty, it is good to know that Swindon is set to weather the storm.

Re: Swindon in the Media

Thanks for the update - out of interest, do developers take any notice of these sort of reports and would they influence a decision of whether to come to Swindon or not? Do they put more emphasis on the Macro environment and view these reports with scepticism? Another thing on this.....if, as some people say, the current economic climate improved in 2 years - it would take this long to build Regent Place / Union square anyway - do developers take this view also or do they look for more certainty before committing to a scheme?

Also - good to see the Brunel canopies being replaced. If only the metal columns were re-clad with some decent bath type stone the place would look a 100 times better and really fit in with the Regent Place development.

Still got fingers crossed for the DA's.

Re: Swindon in the Media

Can I enquire there is a very large industrial unit being demolished off Hawkworth Drive. This appear to be a key area in the North Star Village regeneration area. Are you able to advise us if this site is being redeveloped? If so what to? Or is purely a demolition of a vacant building?

Re: Swindon in the Media

Hi, this is just demolition of a vacant building that is no longer required. TNSC

Re: Swindon in the Media

Rob - Maybe its the retailers / office occupiers, rather than developers, who would be more interested in these reports? Maybe the general economy is too 'risky' for them to commit to any town at the moment, hence the lack of pre-lets at Regent Place / Union Square? Or maybe this is a normal situation for schemes at this early stage?!

NSC - it's a bit older that the other articles you refer to but the attached link is of a similar mood about Swindon's economy - according to the times it's the 17th most 'recession proof' town in the country!? If only retailers, office occupiers, developers, etc would believe it!!
