Canal Walk
As part of the redevelopment, Arup has been commissioned by Swindon Borough Council, to act as lead Consultant with Sub-consultants Nicholas Pearson Associates providing landscape architecture and urban design advice and Nash Partnership providing architectural advice. In addition the design team will work with the Diana Hatton public arts consultancy to incorporate public art into the scheme.
The design concept aims to provide a vibrant, accessible street scene, encouraging visitors and shoppers to come to Swindon town centre as an exciting destination in its own right as well as for the shopping. Careful use of quality materials and good detailing will provide a design which will stand the test of time and prove long term value for money.
By renewing Canal Walk we aim to:
- improve Swindon's economical sustainability by revitalising the shopping area and encouraging inward investment.
- create a better shopping destination by modernising and enhancing Swindon's pedestrian streets.
- provide a unique identity and quality environment through the use of good design and integrated artwork; making Swindon and exciting place to visit.
- reconnect the town centre with the surrounding countryside; making Swindon a more pleasant place to live by revitalising the link with the old route of the Wilts and Berks Canal.
- build on Swindon's environmental objectives by using locally sourced and environmentally accredited materials wherever possible.
