Canal Walk Design
Design Ethos
We have used a clean, uncomplicated and simple design dynamic to transform the staid and dated character of Canal Walk. Curves create spaces of many scales and subtle character to counterpoint the formal linear space.
Design Concept
We combine key themes of nature, climate and technology to create one very special place for people to visit, use and enjoy. The street, its framing buildings and bridges are treated as an integral part of each other.
Nature:
- Natural themes of water, vegetation and greenery, aspects of the countryside coming into the town;
- Urban ecology, light and air for health and well-being;
- Use of natural materials; timber, stone and water;
- Trees, green alls and images from nature.
Climate:
- Connection and positive interaction between the local weather, microclimate and human experience;
- Optimisation of sunlight, use of shelter and shade;
- Rainfall and runoff as entertaining elements, using paving textures, lighting and water elements to achieve this.
Technology:
- Interpreting Swindon's leading role in technological innovation with climate responsive and interactive control systems for art and lighting;
- Creation of a street that changes with the weather, the passage of time and the seasons;
- Representing past innovation and heritage through the themes of the winding route of the Wilts and Berks Canal, and ripples on water.
Sustainability
Sustainability is not just about making something friendly although this is an important design aspect. We consider that sustainability also encompasses health, well-being and social aspects.
