Key components

Education and Culture

  • A new library, museum and art gallery will create a backbone to the project and form part of a new cultural area. With the Wyvern Theatre now under new management, future improvements to the entrance and facilities of the theatre are proposed. The area could also be the location for a town centre cinema
  • Provision is being made to locate The University of Bath's Institute of Contemporary and Interdisciplinary Arts in The Promenade. This education facility will increase the area's cultural diversity and establish important links with other creative and cultural institutions

Commercial

  • Provision of work space to accommodate the future needs of Swindon's successful creative and performance industries, as well as encouraging the development of new enterprises

Residential

  • Potential for some 500 homes that will see a diverse mix of high quality accommodation

Retail and Leisure

  • Provision of small scale accommodation to allow a diverse mix of cafés, restaurants and specialist shops to complement and support the cultural and educational activities
  • Other leisure uses may wish to benefit from the critical mass of activities in the area and provision will be made to accommodate these as they come forward

Urban Design and Movement

  • Buildings of iconic contemporary design
  • New and improved public spaces to enhance cultural setting especially around the Wyvern Theatre and Regent Circus
  • Better pedestrian linkages through the area and connections into Regent Street
  • Traffic flow improvements to reduce the severance of the gyratory system at Regent Circus and increase the space given over to pedestrians
  • New ground level crossings over Princes Street and Regent Circus
