Retail and Leisure

  • Provision of at least 50,000 sq m of additional retail and leisure space in the central core through development of both new and existing shopping areas
  • Secure a major new department store
  • Broaden the retail offer to encourage both larger national chains and small independents to establish outlets in the town centre

Residential

  • Create residential space over shops to help provide activity throughout the day and evening

Urban Design and Movement

  • Improvement of pedestrian routes to create a lively and appealing retail circuit with better linkages either side of Regent Street to adjoining areas
  • Enhancements to the environment of the traditional retail areas including The Parade, Canal Walk, Regent Street, Bridge Street and Wharf Green with improvements to paving, planting, street furniture and lighting
  • Improvements to existing shopper parking facilities and the provision of new multi-storey facilities to replace many of the surface car parks and accommodate the projected increase in shopper numbers
