A strategy to improve the quality of central Swindon's streets, squares and parks has been drafted. The proposal sets out guidelines for public spaces in the town centre and will act as a reference for developers and the Council, ensuring the streets and spaces compliment the vision for a new and improved Swindon.
With involvement from local groups and representatives of the community, this draft Public Realm Strategy Supplementary Planning Document, was created by Urban Initiatives working with The New Swindon Company, Swindon Borough Council and South West of England Regional Development Agency.
It covers issues such as:
- which street furniture eg bins, benches etc, should be used
- what the street surface should look like, for example, which paving slabs to use
- outline concepts and guidelines for key public spaces
Swindon Borough Council is putting this document out for public consultation for six weeks from 15 March 2006. It can be viewed at the Council's offices at Premier House and Wat Tyler House during office hours of 9.00 am to 4.30 pm. Alternatively it will be available at the Council's libraries during opening hours and will be accessible via www.swindon.gov.uk from 15 March.
Peter James, Chief Executive of The New Swindon Company said: "Streets, squares and parks are key elements for improving Swindon. In fact, public feedback has suggested that good quality public areas and spaces are a priority. That is why we have put so much effort into establishing principles and guidelines for future improvements."
The South West of England Regional Development Agency has granted funding for the public realm strategy. Steve Richards, head of operations for Wiltshire, comments: "The strategy is an important part of Swindon's regeneration and demonstrates our commitment to improving the quality of surroundings for businesses, residents and visitors alike."
