Changes at The New Swindon Company

Thu 3rd September 2009

The future for Swindon’s town centre is bright despite the current economic problems according to Cabinet member for Culture, Regeneration and Economic Development, Phil Young who is looking at refocusing the Council’s regeneration strategy. He said:

“We have major long term investment secured for the town centre, achieved some visible improvements with the new central Library and Wharf Green redevelopment and are about to begin £3.9 million pounds worth of improvements to Canal Walk. All of this against the back drop of one of the worst recessions in history.

We need to hold onto our long term vision for the town and work hard to position Swindon to come out of the current global economic problems as strongly as possible. We must balance this though with delivering tangible regeneration as quickly as possible so that local people and businesses feel a renewed sense of confidence in the town. I will be asking all involved to revisit our plans and focus our efforts on delivery.”

There is going to be a review of how regeneration is delivered in the borough and in particular a look at how the New Swindon Company can evolve to meet the new challenges that Swindon faces. As part of these developments Peter James, Chief Executive of the New Swindon Company has decided to step down from the role he took up in October 2005. He said:

“It has been a pleasure to be part of such an exciting period for Swindon and with major investment secured for the town centre I believe there is a bright future. There has been lots of discussion with partners about how we develop our approach to regeneration and it feels like the right time to step aside and let the next chapter of Swindon’s regeneration begin.”

Cllr Phil Young, said:

“I’d like to thank Peter for his efforts over the last three and a half years and wish him well for the future. He has guided Swindon’s regeneration through a critical period and can be proud of his achievements.”
