Demolition of Davis House signals a step forward for Swindon

The demolition of Davis House, Carfax Street, by contractor Lawson Demolition, is due for completion at the end of March this year and forms part of the one billion-pound regeneration plans The New Swindon Company (TNSC) is delivering on behalf of Swindon Borough Council and Partners.

TNSC, in partnership with the South West of England Regional Development Agency (South West RDA), negotiated the purchase of the land in April last year with the intention of levelling the ground and turning the space into a car park to meet the needs of businesses, residents and shoppers in the area.

Cllr Phil Young comments: "The demolition of Davis House falls into our regeneration plans for Union Square. The site itself forms an essential part of the overall design and when developed will form part of one of the South West's best example of a mixed use development. When complete, Union Square will feature 55,000 square metres of prime office space, 40,000 square metres of leisure facilities, a hotel and 450 new homes, providing a new focus for the town and boosting the quality of urban life."

Steve Richards, Head of Operations for the South West RDA, added: "Davis House was our final land purchase for the regeneration area Union Square and it is great to see the site progress. Swindon looks to benefit greatly from the development and investment in the town and we are very glad to play a part in that."

Davis House was previously owned by the Salvation Army Housing Association and their homeless services are now being provided in a new location in Princes House, Princes Street.
