It is with deep sadness that we announce the death of our friend and colleague Jan Tierney. Jan sadly lost her battle against terminal cancer on Saturday 19th January.
Jan was a familiar face within the Swindon Business and Cultural scene having been a founding member of The New Swindon Company in 2002 and previous to that working for Swindon organisation PHH. Jan was very passionate about Swindon and was exceptionally keen to see that the town got the redevelopment it deserved. Of major interest to Jan was that 'Culture' played a pivotal role in the regeneration. When the role of Chair of the Swindon Cultural Partnership came up Jan took on the role with vigour and enthusiasm and led the group from the front.
Jan lived in Witney with her two children Nicole and Phil and enjoyed a very active life trying anything from walking to body boarding and sailing. Her determination to lead a full life was very evident when in 2006 Jan completed the 'Race for Life' even though the previous year she had undergone a cancer related hip replacement operation. One passion for Jan was her involvement with the NSPCC, for many years she raised funds and awareness of the work the organisations provides. Another passion for Jan was her beloved Manchester United, originally from Manchester, she avidly followed the team always using players names as system and security passwords.
Peter James, Chief Executive of The New Swindon Company, commented, 'Jan bought with her such vitality and energy, her passing will undoubtedly leave a void in the lives of those who knew her. She will be sorely missed. Our deepest sympathy goes out to Nicole and Phil and Jan's sisters and parents.'
John Cullum, Chairman of The New Swindon Company said, 'Having worked many years with Jan at both PHH and The New Swindon Company, I will fondly remember a big personality combined with a great sense of humour, passion and energy. Her strength of character shone through during the difficult health problems she endured; she will remain an inspiration to the many friends who cared for her.'
Leader of the Council, Roderick Bluh was also very saddened at the news, 'Jan was a lovely, energetic lady who was very clearly committed to the regeneration of Swindon. She will be so sadly missed. My thoughts and sympathies are with her family.'
The funeral will be held at St Mary's Church next to Cogges Church Centre, Church Lane, Witney at 11am on Tuesday, 29th January. All are welcome. With Jan's involvement in the NSPCC and Cancer Research the family have requested that any donations are made to these charities, a collection will also be made at the church. They are also happy for flowers to be given; over the past few months Jan very much enjoyed the flowers that so many of her friends and colleagues sent. The funeral directors are Fisher & Townsend, contact Jackie Phipps on 01993 702675, 81 High Street, Witney, OX28 6HY.
