Swindon Town Centre Management has been working with The New Swindon Company to make good use of the hoardings around the former Post Office site opposite Zurich Financial Services. The hoardings provide a great opportunity to promote the town and to inform passers-by of forthcoming events.
In partnership with Edge Imaging and Zurich Financial Services, a large panoramic photograph of the town centre has been produced to encourage people to experience some of the forthcoming attractions. Faced with a 420 degree view of the central shopping area, pedestrians cannot fail to notice this unique piece of artwork as they enter the town centre.
Oliver O'Dell, Town Centre Development Manager, commented, "We have lots of public spaces that we want to use to interest, inspire and challenge people and their perceptions of the town. This project is the first of many ideas for which we are seeking sponsorship."
The intention is to change the photograph in tune with the seasons so that different parts of the town can be shown. News about events in the centre will be updated regularly. Swindon Town Centre Management is currently looking for festive sponsors as it is planned that the next image will portray Christmas.
Commented Philip Watkins, interim Chief Executive of The New Swindon Company, "We hope that highlighting events in the town centre in such an eye-catching way will get more people interested in what's happening in the town. This is an example of Swindon's ability to create exciting and innovative ways to bring both visual impact and information to the public."
The hoardings are situated around the former Post Office which forms part of The Exchange, which is one of seven major projects for the town centre and is proposed for mixed use development including retail, offices, leisure and new homes. The next stage in the regeneration planning process, which will include opportunities for public participation.
