Winning visions for Swindons future

Winning visions for Swindons future The Swindon Cultural Partnership is delighted to announce the winners of this Autumns ART COMPETITION!

The art competition, sponsored by The New Swindon Company, invited local people to enter works on the theme of Facing the Future with our Past- how the riches of Swindons heritage may be of relevance to the towns future. A top prize of £500 was on offer for the artist who best tackled the theme.

The competition attracted many entries, of an extremely impressive standard, which proved very tricky for the judges as they sought to agree upon the winner.

The judges for this exciting competition included Erik Burnett-Godfree of BBC Radio Swindon, Anthony Osborne of Swindon Evening Advertiser, Barbara Dixon, Curator of the Swindon Art Gallery, local artist David Bent, and Peter James of The New Swindon Company.

After much deliberation, the winning artwork, entitled Swindon, by artist Laurie Plant was found to be the judges favourite. This painting offers glimpses of well-known streets and buildings in the town, with an innovative and futuristic approach to composition. This dramatic layout of the work, which can be viewed any-side-up, worked extremely well because of Lauries brilliant technical skills in representing Swindons townscapes. The judges felt that the art work presented an impressive vision for the towns future, with its architectural heritage playing a leading role in the towns identity.

Two runners-up were also chosen, Let them Eat Art by an artists group known as Sabian Procta, and Roof Gardens by Tim Carroll. Let them Eat Art was selected as the judges were impressed by the groups unusual and original representation of how Swindons heritage had influenced their creativity. Roof Gardens was chosen as the judges warmed to the artists green and pleasant vision of Swindon, with its positive portrayal of environmental issues.

Copies of the art works entered into the competition will be printed onto hoardings around the town centre, to go on display early next year. The display of the art works on the hoardings will showcase the strength of creativity in the town, and also highlight how Swindons artistic community views the towns place in history.
