Swindon's regeneration progresses with depot acquisition

Following the unveiling of The New Swindon Company's vision to transform the town centre last month, national regeneration agency, English Partnerships, has acquired Swindon's Bus Depot site of just over 1 hectare from Thamesdown Transport to form an integral part of The Exchange the flagship commercial area adjacent to Fleming Way.

Coupled with the purchase of the former Post Office site, the bus depot acquisition kicks-off plans that will ultimately see this area transformed into a bold new town centre commercial district that will provide new jobs for the growing population, encourage economic growth and attract new investors. As well as town centre offices, the project area known as the The Exchange also makes provision for housing, shops, cafes and restaurants, ensuring it is lively both during and outside office hours.

"This is a significant step to being able to bring forward The Exchange project area as a reality," enthuses Peter Andrews, Chief Executive of The New Swindon Company. "Following the launch of the major projects last month, we are now very much focused on delivery and are well aware that the people of Swindon want to see real progress."

"Today's announcement demonstrates the commitment of all those involved to the transformation of The Exchange, an area that is integral to the wider Regeneration Framework for Swindon," said Duncan Innes, Regional Director for English Partnerships. "We are pleased to support The New Swindon Company as a funding partner and we look forward to realising the full potential of this centrally located, growing town."

John Owen, Managing Director of Thamesdown Transport commented, "We have outgrown our existing facility on Corporation Street. I am delighted that this sale will facilitate our move to state of the art premises at Barnfield which will enable us to further improve the quality of bus services that we can offer to the growing population of Swindon. The move to Barnfield is currently scheduled for late summer 2005."

The New Swindon Company will continue to encourage public participation. As each project comes forward for development there will be opportunities for public participation in establishing the detail. It is expected that discussions regarding the first phase of The Exchange will take place during next year.
